On this day, 5 years ago, Spun Bicycles opened up for business. It was February 23rd and Dominic had finished construction inside the shop 6 weeks early. We had no idea what the future would hold but this was IT for us. It HAD to work.
Dominic was so confident, he was in his element – bicycles, and chatting it up with strangers. He was so good. I, on the other hand, was a nervous wreck! Totally winging it, figuring it all out as I went along, just putting a smile on my face and saying a silent prayer and going for it.
Here we are now, five years later, still open for business, five star reviews all the way, and we have finally come to the conclusion that we are pretty damn good at this small biz thing!! We have become a true Mom and Pop bike shop, just like I always dreamed.
I LOVE small mom and pop shops. There’s this delicatessen I love to go to near my house in Westwood. I visit them every Friday for fresh meat and fish. They know my name. They ask me how my week was. They thank me for my business and when I leave I always yell out “thanks guys, have a great weekend”. THIS IS HOW SMALL BIZ WORKS. It’s a connection you make in your community and not just a sale.
Throughout the past five years I feel incredibly lucky to connect with so many people through our little bike shop. We get to know some of you on a bigger level rather than just swiping your credit card and saying ‘thanks have a good day’. This makes it just extra special for both Dominic and myself. We have truly made some good friends over the years and the ability to connect, be present and always willing to go above and beyond for our customers is how we roll. This is how it was when we started and this is how it will always continue to be at Spun.
Dominic and I have settled into our roles at the shop and when we aren’t at the shop we are usually at home talking about the shop, an order, a service, an experience, something – it actually has made our marriage stronger and stronger as the years go by. Spun Bicycles is our baby, we love coming to work and we love being busy.
So I just wanna say Thanks to every single one of you. You all took a chance on us when we opened and kept coming back. Your support means more than you will ever know.
Come celebrate with us on March 10th, 10am-8pm. Cake, pizza, booze, etc. It’s an anniversary party for you guys.
