Last year, a friend of mine told me about this program called Ride For Reading. He participated in a delivery of books to kids via bikes at Interbike in Las Vegas and said it was an amazing experience.
I looked into the program, whose mission is to promote literacy and healthy living through the distribution of books via bicycle to children from low-income areas. I decided that when our bike shop opened, I would somehow make this happen in Cincinnati.
I approached Libby Hunter, of Wordplay, whose mission is to help children find their voices through literacy and creative expression while developing the skills, knowledge and character necessary for them to succeed. I thought if we worked together, we could make this happen in our city.
Libby and I met with members of Mobo Bicycle Co-op and Queen City Bike and decided we could pull it off if we all worked together as a team. We nailed down some ideas and moved forward with our plans. We decided on a school, Saint Peter Claver Latin School for boys, down in Over-The-Rhine. We nailed down a date and time and we are ready to make this a reality!
Thanks to We Have Become Vikings for this rad flier:
May 5th from 4pm to 6pm please join us for a potluck kick off party in Hoffner Park.
May 8th we will meet at Wordplay at 10am to pack up the books and depart by 10:30 to ride downtown. We will have a pizza lunch for the kids and distribute the books. Dominic will be doing a BMX demo for the kids as well.
Books are needed, so if you have any books you’d like to donate, we have donation boxes set up at Spun Bicycles and Wordplay. We prefer gently used books for boys ages 4-13.
Thanks so much and we really hope to see you there!
